Exclusive: 'Fantastic' - Kevin Phillips raves about West Brom ace who's 'gone under the radar'

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has claimed that Romaine Sawyers has gone under the radar as one of the best signings that West Brom made in the summer transfer window.

Sawyers, 28, has been ever-present for the Baggies since returning to The Hawthorns from Brentford in the summer, appearing 29 times across all competitions and missing just two Championship games.

According to stats by WhoScored, no midfielder in the Championship has completed more passes per match than Sawyers has for West Brom this season [66.2]. Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk [2051] is the only Premier League player who can say he has completed more passes than Sawyers [1854] this term.

Ex-Baggies forward Phillips has been impressed with what he has seen from Sawyers and believes that he and Jake Livermore have struck a great partnership in the centre of Slaven Bilic’s midfield.

“I think he’s probably been one of the best players of the season,” Phillips told West Brom News when asked about Sawyers.

“Again, what a fantastic signing. Everything goes through him, him and Livermore, the balance that they have, he just sits and allows Livermore to drive on.

“I think his range of passing as well is excellent, so I actually think he’s been one of those signings that’s gone under the radar a little bit because of [Matheus] Pereira and [Grady] Diangana but I think he has been one of the most important players.”

Overall, Sawyers has been a good signing for West Brom.

It was great to see him return to the Black Country club in the summer and since then he has added a lot of calmness and composure to the midfield, an area which Bilic really needed to improve when he was appointed as manager.

Some fans have been disappointed with Sawyers’ displays lately and many accuse the former Walsall midfielder of being too safe with his passes as a lot go sideways or backwards.

However it is fair to say that Sawyers is still one of the better deep-lying playmakers in the Championship and Albion are lucky to have him.

In other West Brom news, fans slammed this senior player for his display against Luton.
