We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips believes that West Brom now have one hand on winning automatic promotion to the Premier League after beating Hull City.
Albion have now won two matches in a row to keep themselves five points ahead of third-placed Brentford with five matches to play.
Charlie Austin, Ahmed Hegazi, Kamil Grosicki and Grady Diangana were all on the scoresheet for West Brom on Sunday as they beat Hull City 4-2 at The Hawthorns.
Although the win came at a price with Hegazi getting sent off and Kieran Gibbs suffering an injury, Phillips believes that was a major result in terms of the Championship promotion race.
When asked if they have one hand on promotion, Phillips told West Brom News: “Yes, that result was huge.
“I was fearing a bit if they didn’t get a result against Sheffield Wednesday or Hull with the way Brentford are playing, I was a little bit concerned.
“But I think they just showed the quality in these two games. The temperament, the mentality, everything you need to be successful and they showed it.
“There are five games left and unless there’s an absolute disaster, with the players Bilic has got, I can see them getting over the line.”
It is dangerous to predict something so bold at this stage.
Although the Baggies are in a commanding position inside the top-two, it could all go wrong after one or two bad results and Brentford keep up their strong form.
West Brom have some decent fixtures left to play with the exception of difficult ties versus Derby and Fulham.
Derby will be gunning for a play-off spot while Fulham, obviously, are eager to take West Brom’s top-two status off them before the 46th match is finished.
Blackburn, QPR and Huddersfield are also left to play but hopefully they will have nothing to play for by the time we face them.
