'Take a bow' - Quashie makes Coote-Pereira claim after West Brom penalty controversy

Former West Brom midfielder Nigel Quashie has blasted referee David Coote following his performance in Albion’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United.

Coote controversially changed his mind after initially awarding the Baggies a penalty early in the second half of Saturday night’s Premier League tie.

To rub salt into the wounds Coote then gave the Red Devils a penalty just minutes later for a very harsh handball against Darnell Furlong.

The former Baggies man took to Twitter to criticise the referee, sarcastically telling Coote to ‘take a bow’ for his poor performance.

He wrote, “Great performance West Brom and deserved something from the game. Take a bow David Coote, the only thing you got right tonight was not sending Matheus Pereira off for them nutmegs.”

Questions will be asked of Coote after his terrible performance at Old Trafford especially after he was brought in to referee Saturday’s game after initially being given VAR duty at Anfield this weekend.

Coote was due to be the VAR official for Liverpool’s game against Leicester on Sunday but he was inexplicably removed from that post and given the whistle in Albion’s tie with Man United.

There was a public outcry from some Liverpool fans as Coote was the VAR referee that controversially decided to not issue Jordan Pickford with a red card for the Everton keeper’s awful challenge on Virgil van Dijk in October’s Merseyside derby.

Coote was once again involved in VAR controversy at Old Trafford as he decided to overturn his own decision to take a penalty away from the Baggies even though it seemed like his initial decision was correct.

Albion will feel hard done by as their performance merited at least a point at Old Trafford but yet again VAR was the main talking point after a Premier League game and little was stated about the Baggies’ excellent performance.

In other West Brom news, some Baggies fans have lauded the efforts of one Albion player in Saturday’s unfortunate loss.
