Sam Allardyce wants to sign a striker in the remaining days of the January transfer window and Galatasaray forward Mbaye Diagne seems to be the strongest possibility for West Brom.
The Daily Mail had previously reported that West Brom are in talks over a deal for the 29-year-old.
And The Express said that Gala have now identified a replacement for Diagne.
Joseph Masi in the Express & Star has said that the Turkish club need to shift players to hit financial fair play limits and that could see Diagne move.
That all sounds positive, but Masi also conducted two interviews with Turkish journalists Berk Gol and Burhan Can Terzi who gave their honest opinions on Diagne – and it wasn’t all glowing.
Gol said of Diagne, “His passing isn’t the best when it comes to linking play… he is not a fast player, which potentially could be an issue in the Premier League.”
Gol also said, “I don’t think a loan offer is realistic… But if Albion offer about 10 million euros, I think they can buy Diagne.”
Gol did say that he would score goals with the right service.
Burhan Can Terzi said: “In his first season he didn’t quite live up to expectations. He did score 10 goals, but most of those were penalties.
“Diagne is a static forward who is efficient within the box. He has a similar style to Mario Jardel – if you give the ball to him in the area he can score goals. But he is not fast.
“Galatasaray fans are very passionate and follow each and every player closely. But for Diagne there are fans who like him and fans who don’t.”
He did add a bit of hope when he said, “With the right service and support from his teammates I think he could score in any league” but also mentioned Diagne not turning up to the title celebrations.
We have to take a gamble
We want goals and we don’t really care how we get them at the moment.
Getting a striker who can get 10 goals in the second half of the season is a big ask and it’s always going to involve a gamble.
Who would loan out a striker in January who would guarantee 10 goals in the Premier League?
West Brom fans might be a bit worried to hear the far-from-glowing reports on Diagne but both Turkish journalists did say that he can score goals.
The fact that he’s divided the fans and that his attitude has been questioned is worrying, but there’s not a huge risk in a loan with an option.
Beggars can’t be choosers and a static goal-scorer with baggage might well be the best that we can hope for.
It’s very far from a sure-fire thing, though.
