View: Big Maitland-Niles development gives West Brom huge shot at deadline-day swoop

West Brom have been handed a potentially huge boost in their quest to bring Ainsley Maitland-Niles to The Hawthorns.

With three Premier League sides in the hunt for the player, it looked like being a race between Albion, Southampton and Leicester.

Sky Sports had said that Arsenal preferred to send him to Southampton, and didn’t want him to go to Leicester as they’re direct rivals for European places.

However, south-coast journalist Adam Blackmore has now claimed that Southampton have “ended their interest” in him after “becoming increasingly frustrated in negotiations with his reps.”

He said that Southampton would move onto other targets.

This brings Maitland-Niles right back on the table for West Brom as far as we’re concerned.

It would be foolish for Arsenal to make Leicester a stronger side at the moment.

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett had said that the signing of Okay Yokuslu would end Albion’s interest in the Arsenal player.

However, if a deal is there to be made and little time to do it, he could well be back in Big Sam’s mind.

The right-sided midfielder can also play in the centre and at right-back and that versatility could make him a hugely important addition to the side.

The one reason why West Brom should go all-out to get him is that he’s a proven Premier League player.

Mbaye Diagne looked good on Saturday but Yokuslu is a gamble and untested over here.

Out of anyone, Maitland-Niles is the one we wanted in January.

The only concern is that Southampton pulled out after talking with his agents. We’re not sure what that’s about but if he’s being very demanding then that could scupper a move anywhere for him with only hours remaining before the window shuts.

Hopefully, it’s just about where he wants to play and fingers crossed West Brom get to make a big announcement later on today.
