We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the West Brom News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest West Brom games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…
Keith Hackett claims referees can be reluctant to give red cards after analysing Thiago Silva’s dismissal against West Brom.
The former Premier League referee says the Brazilian definitely deserved a second yellow – a view that was shared by another ex-referee, Dermot Gallagher [Sky Sports via Football Daily].
Also, Hackett believes the incident was representative of a wider view held by referees, suggesting David Coote would have felt more confident in giving Silva a second yellow – the defender could have been dismissed for his first bad tackle.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Hackett said of the second yellow, “No that’s nailed on, that’s an easy one.”
“When you issue a red card for any defence the player, for a red card on its own, can appeal.
“If you receive a yellow card in England you cannot appeal that yellow card, so two yellows absolutely lock up the fact that he is going to be suspended.
“Sometimes referees will go for safety and give a second yellow.”
Big Sam genius
Silva could have been sent off for his first booking as he cynically brought down Matheus Pereira in a dangerous area.
His second booking was a moment where he completely lost his head as he was never going to close down Okay Yokuslu’s shot – and did not need to anyway.
Regardless, Albion’s brilliant intensity in pressing high up the pitch forced the mistakes.
Sam Allardyce may have lured Chelsea into a false sense of security by deploying three centre-backs, as most of our defending came from the front line.
In fact, Big Sam beat Chelsea at their own game as it was Thomas Tuchel’s press that he was most wary of ahead of the match [talkSPORT GameDay Live 02/04].
He deserves a lot of credit for the tactics he deployed, and hopefully West Brom take this winning performance into the next match.
