Martin Keown thrilled by Matheus Pereira in West Brom clash v Arsenal
Martin Keown was blown away by the performance of West Brom playmaker Matheus Pereira against Arsenal this evening.
The Baggies star was pulling the strings early on at the Emirates and almost opened the scoring with a phenomenal long-range drive that just whistled wide.
Keown fired a warning to his former side to get tighter to Pereira, but it appeared as though they decided to ignore that as he eventually ended up scoring in the second half.
Speaking during live commentary of the game on BT Sport, Keown was thrilled by the Brazilian playmaker in the final third.
“He is a wonderful player,” he said.
“It would do Arsenal well to pick him up today. Everybody knew what he was going to try and do, nobody was getting close enough to him.
“He hits it, why not? It’s a wonderful effort.”
We genuinely feel deeply sorry for Pereira.
It is amazing to watch him go to work for free in the final third, but when you see those around him, it is clear that he has no chance and can’t do everything by himself.
With relegation confirmed now, it is hard to see Pereira sticking around at The Hawthorns for another season of Championship football.
The Brazilian has more than proved that he is far too good enough for that, and possibly too good for us as he carries us on his shoulders for yet another 90 minutes, his goal was evidence of that.
It isn’t good enough from the squad, and with only three games to go, he won’t have to put up with it for much longer; which pains us to write.
