Report: West Brom keen to sign Cagliari forward Kiril Despodov
West Brom have emerged as one of the teams interested in signing Cagliari attacker Kiril Despodov this summer.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Baggies, along with Valencia and Galatasaray, are keen on signing the 24-year-old.
Despodov has taken legal action against Cagliari for unpaid wages, as he was told he wasn’t entitled to wages for July and August last summer after he returned from loan.
The striker has spent the current season on loan at Ludogorets Razgrad where’s he’s scored six goals and provided 12 assists in 27 games. [TransferMarkt]
The Bulgarian side have the option to sign him permanently in the summer, but he could be tempted to move to England should the Baggies make an offer for him.
Per TransferMarkt, he’s valued at £2.25m and his contract at the Serie A club runs out at the end of the 2022/23 season.
Not what we need
Despodov is an enigma. While he could be eye-catching and silky on the attack, he’s equally unbothered when asked to defend.
Known to be a wide player, the 24-year-old loves to hug the touchline and while he may stylistically be a different player to Matheus Pereira, he tends to occupy similar positions when the team has the ball.
His movement is noteworthy as he is an extremely selfless player when it comes to sacrificing his goals in order to set up his other teammates.
However, when tasked with putting the ball into the back of the net, he’s not the most reliable of finishers.
This season he’s underperforming his xG by nearly 2 and his conversion rate of shots taken inside the penalty area is less than 10 percent, per WyScout. He’s also averaging 323 minutes per goal in all competitions this season.
Defensively, he has been found wanting time and again, and is a decent player to have on if the team is dominating possession.
Big Sam would certainly want his wide players to put in the hard yards off the ball, so in terms of his positioning, he may not be the best signing, and we would rather the club look elsewhere.
