Kevin Phillips tips West Brom to secure instant Premier League return if they hire Chris Wilder

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

West Brom have a massive opportunity to seal an instant return to the Premier League with it being reported Chris Wilder is close to being appointed their new manager.

That’s the view of former Albion striker Kevin Phillips, who is excited about the Black Country club’s promotion prospects after Mirror journalist David Anderson reported Wilder will be the next Baggies boss.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Thursday, Anderson reported that as long as there are no unexpected hitches, Wilder will replace Sam Allardyce in The Hawthorns hot seat.

In an exclusive interview with West Brom News, Phillips was asked whether Wilder could secure an instant return to the top-flight for the Albion.

He said: “How long is a piece of string? Blimey, that’s the million-dollar question.

“When you look out there at who’s available at this precise moment that would have any chance of getting them out of this league, Chris Wilder would be at the very top of the list.

“They’ve got every opportunity [of an instant return] but it also depends on who goes and who comes in during the summer, what funds are made available and are they going to be Chris’ signings?

“There are a lot of factors in it but you would have to say they’ve got a great opportunity for bouncing straight back with him in charge.”

We’re yet to see any concrete speculation linking West Brom with new signings but later on Thursday, Albion announced their retained list for the summer.

Hal Robson-Kanu, Kamil Grosicki, Kyle Edwards, Lee Peltier, Charlie Austin, Branislav Ivanovic and Andy Lonergan are all being released while new contracts have been offered to a number of youngsters.

Among those youngsters are Caleb Taylor and Tim Iroegbunam, who were in the matchday squad for the defeat to Leeds on Sunday.

Could we see Wilder utilise West Brom’s academy options next season?

If funds are tight, he might have to.

In other West Brom news, a Manchester United player has sent a message to an Albion ace who’s been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
