Kevin Phillips reacts as West Brom striker Robson-Kanu misses out on Wales squad
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is surprised by Wales’ decision to leave West Brom forward Hal Robson-Kanu out of their squad for the European Championships this summer.
It has already been announced that Robson-Kanu, 32, will leave The Hawthorns when his contract expires at the end of June.
However, the ex-Reading man has been a regular fixture in the Welsh squad over the years and his omission wasn’t expected by Phillips, who’s been impressed by what he’s done in the last few weeks of the season at the Albion.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “He’s performed well for Wales and he scored a crucial goal for them in the last Euros. He’s been a big player for them over the years but maybe it’s just time it came to an end,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“He finished the season strong but maybe they’re judging it on the whole season and that might just be it. Maybe they’re going down a different route with more youth to give other people an opportunity.
“He’s had his chance and he hasn’t played an awful lot of football but I’m a bit surprised because the Welsh squad is not blessed with tonnes of players and he’s a player who knows that level and has performed at that level.
“He’ll be disappointed that he’s not involved.”
Robson-Kanu ended the Premier League season with two goals in three games as he hit the back of the net against Liverpool and Leeds.
Both were sweet, well-struck shots with his left foot but neither have done enough to convince Wales he’s good enough for them for the Euros this summer.
Robson-Kanu starred for the Welsh in 2016 when he was a free agent and ultimately ended winning himself a contract at The Hawthorns as a result.
In March, he was sent home from Wales duty for “breaching protocols“. Maybe that also had something to do with his omission this year.
