ITV pundits stunned by West Brom star Sam Johnstone after England debut
ITV pundits Lee Dixon and Sam Matterface were awestruck by Sam Johnstone on Sunday evening after a spectacular save by the West Brom goalkeeper.
The 28-year-old made his senior England debut against Romania and he played the full 90 minutes, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.
It was one moment in particular that drew special praise from ITV pundits Dixon and Matterface during live coverage of the game.
“It’s a brilliant save,” Matterface said after Johnstone denied Romania in the second half.
“What a stop by Johnstone, he made more saves than anyone else in the Premier League but none as good as that.”
Dixon responded: “What a save that is. He just throws everything at it, he’s quick on his feet, gets back up, it’s a fabulous save.”
Matterface added: “Jordan Pickford would be pretty happy with that sort of save. What a great stop.
“It was absolutely breathtaking, his reaction speed was wonderful.”
Johnstone has come on leaps and bounds this season and his England debut was a just reward for his powers of perseverance.
The Albion shot-stopper has been subjected to more shots than any other Premier League player in the campaign gone by, failing to be protected properly by the rest of his teammates.
We suffered our inevitable relegation back to the Championship last month but it wasn’t for the want of trying on Johnstone’s part.
He excelled in goal and, along with Matheus Pereira, was a rare bright spark in a pretty dismal season.
We don’t know what will happen next, he might have earned himself an instant return to the Premier League, but if he does depart then he leaves with our best wishes after making us proud as punch on Sunday night.
