West Brom eye loan move for Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff
West Brom are in the hunt to sign Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on loan, according to the Evening Chronicle.
The Tyne and Wear newspaper claims Albion are among a host of clubs eyeing the 21-year-old Englishman, with Middlesbrough, Norwich City and Belgian side Anderlecht also sides named as interested parties.
The Chronicle reports that Newcastle manager Steve Bruce will not stand in Longstaff’s way if he decides to quit St James’ Park this summer, after barely featuring last season.
Longstaff is heading into the final year of his Newcastle contract but the club are still open to a loan move, with no mention that a permanent departure will be sanctioned.
The highly-rated youngster burst on the scene in 2019 when he scored a debut winner against Manchester United in a 1-0 victory, leading to glowing praise from a number of pundits.
We’re in desperate need of a central midfielder, so it’s comforting to hear that we are actually being linked with players in that position.
Okay Yokuslu, Conor Gallagher and Ainsley Maitland-Niles finished the season as our first-choice midfield trio, and all three were among our most consistent performers, but they all left The Hawthorns last month after the expiration of their loan deals.
It is highly unlikely any of them will come back – Gallagher and Maitland-Niles will surely remain in the Premier League while Yokuslu is sure to command interest from a team in one of the top five European leagues.
That leaves us with only Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers as senior options from last season, and both have struggled immensely.
We need at least two new central midfielders, and while loan deals are not perfect, the reality is we cannot afford to splurge transfer fees on every player we bring through the door this summer, with a number of areas needing to be addressed.
In other West Brom news, this Albion youngster has been spotted signing a deal with Chelsea.
