Curtis Davies thrilled by Matt Clarke signing for West Brom
Curtis Davies has been blown away by West Brom confirming the loan signing of Brighton enforcer Matt Clarke.
The Derby skipper and Sky Sports pundit labelled his former teammate as the most “natural” defender he had ever seen.
Valerien Ismael moved quickly for the signing of Clarke and reinforced his side ahead of the Championship kicking off next month.
Speaking to the Athletic on Friday, Davies gave a glowing recommendation for the new Baggies defender after his signing was confirmed.
This is one that left us very excited, especially given the fact he has played and trained with him for the past two years at Derby.
“He’s one of the most natural defenders I’ve played with, in terms of putting his body on the line, positional play, winning headers and his strength,” he said.
“He’s still young but he’s already racked up almost 250 games — he’ll do well at West Brom.”
This is the signing we needed.
Ismael likes to have the option of playing three at the back, and this leaves us with four centre-backs all with experience in the Championship.
Dara O’Shea is likely to drop out of the side now and be that back-up option, but that is likely to be best.
The Irish international doesn’t have the experience of Clarke, Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi, all of who have more than proved themselves over numerous seasons.
Davies is one of the best defenders the EFL has seen over the past decade, and his verdict will mean a lot to the likes of Clarke.
Having that ball-playing option that can also drive forward when necessary will help us dominate games yet again, and that is critical after a year of being dominated.
All aboard the Clarke train, we already can’t wait.
