Kevin Phillips raves about David McGoldrick amid West Brom speculation

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has been raving about Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick after he was linked with a move to West Brom.

McGoldrick, 33, is in the final year of his contract at Bramall Lane and according to Football Insider, the Baggies are “lining up a move” to sign him.

The former Republic of Ireland international scored eight goals in 35 Premier League appearances for the Blades last season as they were relegated alongside the Albion.

However, it is understood that West Brom are eyeing McGoldrick for his Championship experience.

He’s made 318 appearances in England’s second-tier across spells at Sheffield United, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich, scoring 75 goals in the process.

Although ex-Albion striker Phillips isn’t blown away by the talk of a potential move for McGoldrick, he does feel as though the Nottingham-born forward would be a good addition to Valerien Ismael’s attack.

Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “I like David, I think he’s got a bit of everything about him.

His hold-up play, energy and attitude are all good and most of all, he scores goals. He’s a good team player as well, we saw that at Sheffield United.

It could be a really good signing. It’s not a huge signing but I think he could turn out to be a good player for West Brom especially with the way the new manager plays football.

We’ve seen how well he fits into a side that plays good football at Sheffield United in that first season in the Premier League.

He’s got Premier League experience too and I know it’s the Championship but I think he’ll be a good addition to the squad.”

West Brom have a shortage of options up front as it stands.

Mbaye Diagne’s loan deal ended at the end of last season while Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu were also let go.

Kenneth Zohore and Karlan Grant are the most likely options to start in the centre-forward position unless Ismael brings in reinforcements.

In other West Brom news, Joseph Masi has shared an update on Conor Hourihane after he was linked with the Albion.
