West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths agrees loan move to Lincoln City
West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths has agreed to join League One side Lincoln City on loan, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile on Saturday morning [24/07/21], Crook claims the 19-year–old shot-stopper is headed for Lincolnshire this season.
He said: “West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths has agreed to join Lincoln on loan.”
It looks like Griffiths will be making the same move made by fellow Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer last season.
Palmer spent the entire 2020/21 campaign on loan at Lincoln, helping the Imps to the League One play-off final before they were defeated by Blackpool.
Palmer has since returned to The Hawthorns and with uncertainty surrounding the future of Sam Johnstone, the 24-year-old looks likely to stay in the West Midlands to fight it out with David Button for the role of first-choice shot-stopper, should Johnstone depart.
Griffiths spent last season on loan at League Two club Cheltenham Town and was instrumental in their title success, so a move to a higher division appeared to be the sensible next step.
While a return to Cheltenham would have ensured a sense of continuity and allowed him to stay in familiar surroundings, Lincoln are likely to have higher expectations than the recently-promoted Robins.
That’s likely to have appealed to Albion, who want him playing for a side striving for success.
Griffiths looks sure to be challenging for a first-team berth at Albion in the near future, but this looks to be the right move to ensure his development is not stunted as a second or third-choice goalkeeper.
