Kevin Phillips: Matheus Pereira wants to quit West Brom

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips predicts Matheus Pereira wants to quit West Brom amid reports the Brazilian is ruling himself out of pre-season friendly matches.

Pereira, 25, is yet to feature for the Baggies ahead of next season amid speculation surrounding his future at The Hawthorns.

After the friendly match against Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week, ex-Birmingham Mail reporter Chris Lepkowski said on Twitter that Pereira made the decision not to play.

The Athletic then followed that up by reporting that Pereira has not been impressing Valerien Ismael in training and that the Baggies boss has effectively frozen out the ex-Sporting CP playmaker.

It is understood that Pereira gave consent to being left out of friendlies, leading to Phillips feeling as though the Brazilian is desperate to move on before the transfer window closes.

Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “That just means he wants out – it’s as simple as that. He’s obviously trying to force a move.

“I said all along I hope it doesn’t get down to that but it’s clear that the player wants to leave the football club.

Obviously, agents have been doing a lot of work in the background, there must be clubs lined up.

From my experience, the agent has probably told him to act like this to force a move.

It’ll just be a matter of time before he moves on, which will be a shame.

Pereira has been linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League and in Germany, where he shone on loan for Nuremberg before joining West Brom in 2019.

The Athletic reports Albion want over £25million for the 25-year-old but could also be willing to accept a loan deal.

In other West Brom news, Joseph Masi has shared an update on Conor Hourihane after he was linked with the Albion.
