Kevin Phillips: West Brom squad depth could be concern
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has insisted that the squad depth of West Brom could be a real concern as the Championship season drags on.
Valerien Ismael was forced into signing Kean Bryan on Tuesday, with Dara O’Shea and Matt Clarke out injured for the foreseeable future.
Phillips believes that the younger players gave promising glimpses in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal, but jumping into the Championship could be different.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Phillips said, “When you saw the youngsters they’ve got in the Arsenal game, they’ve got some good players.
“It’s always a big ask for them to step up to the Championship and make a real impression, but it helps if West Brom are still flying.
“Naturally, that would be my only concern if they were to be missing two or three players, who is going to step in?
The signing of Bryan proved that the Baggies are only two injuries away from the need for an emergency signing.
Having said that, no one could have expected that two of the best centre-defenders at The Hawthorns would get injured at the same time.
It has been an unfortunate month in that department and moving forward, Ismael will be hoping for more luck.
The other areas that are concerning are right-back and in midfield, but hopefully, that won’t come to light in the coming months.
Alex Mowatt and Jake Livermore are more prone to suspensions as they play so close to the line, so that will be one that the Albion need to take care of and be careful.
