Kevin Phillips reacts to West Brom-Dara O'Shea injury blow
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has expressed his sadness at Dara O’Shea’s injury blow that could sideline the West Brom defender for the majority of the 2021/22 campaign.
O’Shea, 22, suffered a fractured ankle while playing for the Republic of Ireland against Portugal last week.
He also sustained ligament damage during the World Cup qualifier in Faro, and West Brom announced on Tuesday [07/09/21] that he has been ruled out for four to six months.
Ex-Albion striker Phillips believes O’Shea’s absence could hit them hard
“I feel so sorry for the kid, he’s been one of their most consistent players,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“Whatever position he’s been asked to play in he’s given his best and he’s played very, very well.
“There’s always a risk when a player goes on international duty. As a manager, you’re crossing your fingers that one of your most consistent players doesn’t come back injured but unfortunately, that’s what’s happened.
“That’s why I’ve always said you need cover in areas, you need two players for every position.
“It’s a huge blow, and you would have to say, if that’s the case (six months), that’s his season finished, because by the time he comes back, trains and gets ready, his season could be done.
“I feel sorry for him but it’s football, it happens, that’s why you have big squads and you have to deal with it. But naturally, it will be a blow to their title push this season.”
