Kevin Phillips: Opportunity knocks for Jordan Hugill at West Brom

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips suggests Jordan Hugill has a big chance to assert himself in the West Brom side with Callum Robinson searching for full fitness.

Robinson, 26, scored three Championship goals in as many games at the start of the season before going goalless against Blackburn Rovers on August 21.

However, he has not started a match since that 2-1 win at Ewood Park after testing positive for COVID-19, forcing him to miss games against Arsenal and Peterborough United.

Robinson returned to action for the Republic of Ireland during the international break, appearing as a substitute against Azerbaijan and Serbia, while he came on in the 59th minute in the 1-1 draw with Millwall on Saturday.

With the ex-Aston Villa attacker still on his way back to full fitness, Phillips says Norwich City loanee Hugill has an opportunity to work his way into the side.

“100% [chance for Hugill to get minutes with Robinson not up to speed],” Phillips told West Brom News.

“There’s been a lot spoken about Hugill over the years. At one point there were Premier League clubs looking at him, we even looked at him when I was at Stoke City.

“He’s got the ability, but it’s time, it’s that point in his career where if he gets a chance he needs to take it.

“Hopefully, he does take it and he gets a run in the side because he has got the ability and he gives you that different dimension.

“He’s a big, powerful lad, he can hold it up, link play and get on the end of crosses, so let’s hope the training he has had, if he does get an opportunity, he will take it.”
