Derby boss Wayne Rooney expecting tough game against West Brom
West Brom host Derby County on Tuesday night and Wayne Rooney is expecting a tough test coming up against Valerien Ismael’s side.
The Baggies are currently top of the Championship table after picking up 14 points from their opening six games of the campaign, while the Rams have just six points so far.
Rooney knows what to expect from the Frenchman after playing against his Barnsley side last term, and he believes West Brom have even better players to carry out his plans.
The Derby manager said ahead of the clash (via Birmingham Mail): “The extra day of preparation will help, but not by much. West Brom have started the season really well, we know what to expect.
“It’ll be a very physical game with balls coming into our box, so we have to defend well and be ready for that challenge. We’ll have to then create our own chances
“They are a difficult team to play against. As you can see, they play exactly the same way Barnsley played last season, but with better quality players, so we know [Tuesday] will be a very difficult game, and we have to be ready.”
Rooney says it as it is, and the former Manchester United striker knows quality when he sees one.
He would have watched a lot of West Brom games on tape in preparation for tonight’s game, and having done so last term with Barnsley, he knows the difference between both sides.
The Baggies are playing the same style Ismael deployed at his old club last season, and it is no surprise that they are the early league leaders six games into the season.
Despite their limited quality last term, Barnsley reached the play-offs, and much more is expected from The Hawthorns side this term.
Apart from having a better squad at his disposal, the Frenchman now has an experience of what works and what does not, and that should inform the majority of the decisions at his new club in a bid to go one better this term.
West Brom were held to a 1-1 draw by Millwall at the weekend and will now look to bounce back with a victory against a Derby side still struggling with their new style of play under Rooney.
In other West Brom news, pundit is certain the Baggies star will be handed new deal with clause inserted.
