Kevin Phillips reacts as Borussia Dortmund eye West Brom teenager Reyes Cleary
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips wants West Brom to avoid letting Reyes Cleary leave on a permanent basis and instead find a loan move for the in-demand youngster.
According to the Daily Mail, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke and Hoffenheim are among the clubs who are interested in the 17-year-old forward, who’s been compared to ex-Albion loan star Romelu Lukaku.
It is understood that clubs in the Premier League and Italy are also scouting the talented striker.
Cleary has scored a staggering eight goals in four Under-18s Premier League appearances this season for the Baggies, as well as two for the Under-23s in Premier League.
Phillips suggests his former club will want to keep hold of Clearly, who is yet to sign a professional deal at The Hawthorns.
However, he sees a move to Germany potentially being a big draw due to Jude Bellingham’s recent rise at Dortmund.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “Every club, if you’ve got a promising young player coming through, doesn’t want them to leave.
“You want to nurture him, bring him through your own academy and get him involved [with the first-team] as soon as you can.
“Nowadays, there are scouts all over the world who are looking at these young players and looking at talent trying to nick them. But I think West Brom are in a position where if you look at that front line, they’ve got enough players to see them through the season.
“If this kid could go out on loan somewhere, I’ve always been a big fan of getting youngsters out on loan to experience football.
“Sometimes going abroad can help them.
“Jude Bellingham’s stock at Dortmund has gone up and up and up so sometimes a change of culture can help a player.”
In other West Brom news, this big-money player may never pull on Albion’s colours again.
