West Brom ace Sam Johnstone in line to win third senior England cap
West Brom ace Sam Johnstone is expected to be in goal when England face Andorra on Saturday, according to The Athletic.
The goalkeeper is in line to start ahead of Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, with Jordan Pickford set to be rested for the game.
Johnstone featured against Andorra last month in the first-leg of the World Cup qualifiers, helping the Three Lions to a 4-0 win.
The Baggies star is set to earn his third cap for England after making his debut in the 1-0 win against Romania in June ahead of the European Championship.
Despite remaining with West Brom following relegation, Johnstone appears to have kept his place as Pickford’s cover.
He has done well for Valerien Ismael’s side so far in the Championship, and Gareth Southgate is keen to reward him.
While Ramsdale earned a move to Arsenal after Sheffield United went down, recently establishing himself as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice, it appears his West Brom counterpart has been more convincing in the eyes of the national team coaches.
There were initial fears that being in the Championship could harm Johnstone’s chances with the national team, but the Baggies ace is all but guaranteed a place in next summer’s World Cup squad if he keeps impressing.
He will now be keen to keep a third clean sheet in as many international appearances for England on Saturday, and that will do his chances of remaining as second choice a world of good.
