West Brom mailbag: Ismael tactical tweak could be on the cards amid worrying run

Every week we’ll be asking West Brom fans on our Facebook account for questions that will be answered by editor Danny Wright. You can join in by following the West Brom News Facebook account and watching out for weekly mailbag posts.

West Brom fans are never too far away from questioning their manager but it’s happened a lot sooner than anyone would have expected with Valerien Ismael.

Despite Albion sitting third in the Championship table and only dropping down from second on Wednesday night, there have been some calls for Ismael to go amid a worrying run of performances.

In those performances, West Brom’s style of play has been slammed by sections of supporters who are worried that Ismael doesn’t have a plan B.

In this week’s mailbag, West Brom News editor Danny Wright is asked why Ismael’s style of play is never changed as well as other questions on transfers.

Ismael has had a lot of success in his managerial career with this style of play. He took LASK Linz to the Europa League knock-out rounds after finishing top of a group containing Sporting CP, PSV and Rosenborg. Ismael also oversaw a Champions League qualification win over Basel.

At Barnsley, he led a team many thought would go down to the Championship play-offs so his style of play has served him well in his managerial career so far.

However, what happens when that style of play isn’t producing the results that are expected?

Ismael probably doesn’t know that yet and rather than completely overhauling his own system, he’s putting his faith in it and trying to make little tweaks here and there.

As it stands, we’re third in the Championship. Let’s be patient rather than demanding instant results from a man who’s only been here a few months.

As for Romaine Sawyers, there’s nothing like a bad run of form for people to start calling him a “perfectly good midfield player”.

Sawyers was no good for us and if you want to check on how he’s performing at Stoke, have a search on Twitter for what they’re saying about his performances.

Not many Albion fans will have heard of Reyes Cleary before the Daily Mail reported that Borussia Dortmund, Schalke and Hoffenheim are watching the 17-year-old striker.

He’s been likened to Romelu Lukaku and has three goals in three Premier League 2 appearances for the Under-23s this season, as well as eight goals in just four Under-18s Premier League outings.

Cleary is clearly someone with massive potential and fans have every right to be excited by this young prospect.

Should he get some games in West Brom’s first-team? Not yet, probably.

While we all want to see youngsters getting promoted from our first-team, we don’t want them to crumble under any kind of added, unnecessary pressure.

He’s doing well with the youth teams right now so let’s see if he can maintain that.

In other West Brom news, this Albion star has been slammed by a pundit over a “hugely important” issue.
