Kevin Phillips reacts as West Brom sensation Leonardo Cardoso is linked with Chelsea

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns

Chelsea are reportedly working on a deal to sign young West Brom midfielder Leonardo Cardoso after catching the attention of their scouts.

According to Football Insider, the Premier League leaders want to sign up the 16-year-old sensation before he pens a professional deal at The Hawthorns.

It is understood that the England Under-16 international, who’s also represented Portugal at youth level, is a “huge talent” at the Albion and “seen as one of the best young players in the country with the potential to be a Premier League regular of the future”.

It’s not the first time Baggies fans have seen academy products being linked with top clubs and eventually moving on for peanuts.

Izzy Brown, Yan Dhanda, Louie Barry and Jerome Sinclair are examples of players who rose through the academy at the Black Country club only to be pinched away by top clubs.

Kevin Phillips feels it’s a concern for the Baggies that they are rarely able to hang onto their best academy aces but he claims that for the player himself, a move to Chelsea could be a dream come true.

Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “It’s always worrying but you can look at it two ways.

It’s great you’ve got a young player being linked with clubs like Chelsea. From the club’s point of view, you don’t want to lose them but from the player’s perspective, it’s great.

But at West Brom, the kid probably has more of an opportunity to play in the first-team there than he would at Chelsea. You just hope they don’t see him as an asset who’ll never ever get a chance and just see it as a business deal to make money.

It’s great but at the same time, it isn’t because West Brom need to keep their young players at the club and bleed them into the first-team at some point.”

In other West Brom news, Phillips has hit out at Adrian Durham after what he said about Ismael.
