Kevin Phillips wowed by Taylor Gardner-Hickman in West Brom win v Hull

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns

Kevin Phillips was delighted to see Taylor Gardner-Hickman impress for West Brom when he made his league debut against Hull on Wednesday.

Gardner-Hickman, 19, was thrown into Valerien Ismael’s starting line-up for the 1-0 win at The Hawthorns due to Darnell Furlong’s suspension.

The young right-back impressed on the flank for the Baggies, leading to a lot of fans hailing his performance on social media.

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield dubbed Gardner-Hickman as his man of the match from the win over Hull and Phillips was thrilled to see such high praise for the Championship debutant.

“It’s great to see a player being put into such an important game,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“West Brom needed a result after the difficult game at the weekend (3-0 loss to Fulham), that was a tough one, so it was important.

To put the kid in for his league debut is a credit to him.

Man of the match, if people are saying that then that’s a great bonus for the manager moving forward because there are obviously a lot of games left to go this season.

Ismael obviously thinks very highly of Gardner-Hickman and credit to him because he’s had to go out there and put a performance in.

Well done to him.”

Gardner-Hickman made his senior debut for Albion in their 6-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

It now looks as though if Furlong is ever in need of a rest or unavailable again, Ismael has a great young player chomping at the bit to replace him.

In other West Brom news, Neil Lennon was thrilled with this Albion fringe player in the win over Hull.
