Kevin Phillips wants to see Grady Diangana back in West Brom starting XI v Boro
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has insisted that he wants to see more of Grady Diangana in the starting XI in the Championship.
The Baggies take on Middlesbrough at The Hawthorns on Saturday and could make changes after numerous first-team stars missed out.
Phillips believes that with Darnell Furlong likely to return, Jordan Hugill could also start, although he wants Diangana to be given the chance.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Phillips said, “I’d like to see Diangana get a run in the side.
“I like him, technically he’s very good. He’s come back after an injury lay-off so I’d like to see him given an opportunity from the start so he can show us what he’s all about.
“However, if Furlong comes back in, I’d be tempted to but Hugill in there because of the set-plays and the throw-ins. Boro are a physical side so it wouldn’t surprise me if he went down that route to make their physicality. But I would like to see Diangana have a little run if possible.”
Get him in?
Something clearly isn’t 100% in the final third right now for the Baggies, and this change could certainly help that.
Diangana brings in speed, flair and trickery, something that could certainly open up the back door much more than those around him have managed to do recently.
Having conceded three in five minutes in their last clash, Boro are clearly fragile at the back and the last thing they would want is someone such as Diangana running at them.
Valerien Ismael needs to learn to adapt his selection here and there, not becoming too predictable and Diangana coming back in would be perfect.
In other West Brom news, Neil Lennon was thrilled with this Albion fringe player in the win over Hull.
