Individual errors from West Brom defenders leave Ismael frustrated
West Brom are struggling for consistency, and it is hurting their chances of securing automatic promotion as they eye an instant return to the Premier League.
While Valerien Ismael’s direct style of play has sometimes been booed by the fans, it is not the only reason the Baggies are failing to impress.
According to The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley, individual errors, especially from the defenders, have left Ismael frustrated and puzzled, making him lament Albion’s capacity for shooting themselves in the foot.
Players at fault
West Brom are third in the Championship table after 17 games, but the top-two are looking to further pull away, with the two behind them breathing down their neck.
The Hawthorns outfit have made most defensive errors so far this term, making five errors leading to goals and nine errors leading to shots.
Having conceded 15 goals, it is clear to see that they have plenty of work to do if they want to keep up with Bournemouth and Fulham, who have shipped 10 and 14 respectively.
At the other end, the league leaders have scored 31 goals, while the second-place team have bagged 44.
West Brom have missed the most big chances (28), managing to score just 27 goals, and significant improvements are needed at both ends of the pitch if they want to boost their chances of playing Premier League football next season.
While Val Ball is not easy on the eyes, it is clearly not to blame for the club’s underwhelming campaign as the players are failing to get the basics right, and that has to change quickly.
