Carlton Palmer praises Ismael for giving Gardner-Hickman first-team chance
Taylor Gardner-Hickman made his Championship bow for West Brom against Hull City earlier this month, putting in an impressive shift in a 1-0 win.
Carlton Palmer is pleased to see Valerien Ismael hand chances to the 19-year-old this term, and he has praised the Frenchman for believing in the youngster.
Gardner-Hickman made his senior team debut for the Baggies against Arsenal in the League Cup earlier in the season, and he will be looking to make more appearances going forward.
Palmer told This Is Futbol: “When you’ve got a player like that who’s been at the club since the age of six, it’s magnificent to see him come all the way through the ranks and be playing in the first team.
“It’s magnificent to see the manager’s prepared to do that, he’s proven that at Barnsley, he’s prepared to put the young players in.”
It is not common to see teenagers getting the chance to impress in the Championship, especially when the manager is expected to win a game.
However, Ismael threw the academy graduate into action and he did not disappoint despite playing at right wing-back.
Gardner-Hickman did well against Tigers duo Keane Lewis-Potter and Callum Elder, and his runs going forward and crosses were brilliant.
Darnell Furlong returned for the Middlesbrough clash after missing the Hull game through suspension, but West Brom will be confident that they have quality cover in the youngster.
Gardner-Hickman has featured in five games in the Premier League 2 for the under-23s, scoring once and assisting twice.
Given that he can also play on the left, the Baggies have someone capable of covering for two positions, and having him will definitely come in handy.
His performance against Hull has been one of the few positives in West Brom’s gloomy campaign, and other youth players will be hoping to impress and get a chance too.
In other West Brom news, Euro giants want to sign Baggies player, club reps recently at WBA training ground.
