West Brom manager Valerien Ismael calls for "more desire" against Huddersfield Town

West Brom manager Valerien Ismael has asked his players to show “more desire” in the final third in this afternoon’s game against Huddersfield Town.

The Baggies travel to the John Smith’s Stadium hoping to end a run of three successive defeats away from home.

Carlos Corberan’s Terriers sit three points behind the playoff positions in eighth place, while West Brom are third and six points behind the top two.

In his pre-match interview with the club’s official website, Ismael said he wants to see his team taking their chances in West Yorkshire.

“We need to be more ruthless,” he admitted. “We are having more and more possession and creating more and more chances.

“I think, from that point of view, we are on our way. But football is all about scoring goals and being ruthless, especially when teams make the games difficult, which we often find.

“We need more energy and more desire in the attacking areas of the pitch to make sure we can be successful. We need to try and score more goals.”

Lack of cutting edge

West Brom are the fifth highest scorers in the Championship so finding the net is not a huge issue for the Baggies, but certainly in recent matches they have lacked a cutting edge.

Ismael’s side have scored more than once in just one of their last seven matches, which was the 3-0 win over Bristol City.

In the 1-0 victory over Hull City at the start of November, West Brom racked up 17 shots but only narrowly saw off the Championship strugglers thanks to Karlan Grant’s second half goal.

Grant is the key attacking threat in the Baggies team, but other players around him need to step up and share the goalscoring burden.

Norwich City loanee Jordan Hugill has scored just once in 13 appearances this season, while Callum Robinson has not found the net since mid-August.

It could lead Ismael to utilise the January transfer window to bring in attacking reinforcements, with former Barnsley striker Daryl Dike a priority target according to the Express & Star.

In other West Brom news, one Baggies target has spoken about his future amid transfer speculation.
