Kevin Phillips makes Riyad Mahrez comparison as West Brom watch goal machine Rhys Healey

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns

Toulouse goal machine Rhys Healey is exactly the kind of player who Kevin Phillips wants West Brom to be looking at ahead of January.

Healey, 26, has been in stunning form in Ligue 2 this season, leading to Albion sending scouts to watch the ex-MK Dons striker play for Toulouse [TeamTalk].

It is understood that the French club could be willing to sell the Manchester-born striker if a big offer is made for him as he’s set to enter the final 18 months of his contract.

Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips pointed to Riyad Mahrez and Ngolo Kante as examples of the quality you can buy in French football and also suggested Healey’s goalscoring record could make him a good signing for the Albion in January.

“It’s similar to when Leicester signed Riyad Mahrez. That was a gamble and blimey, did it pay off. There was Ngolo Kante at Leicester as well who joined from France so there are players out there who could possibly do it,” said Phillips.

However, as I always say, someone who doesn’t have experience in the Championship and doesn’t know the club could be a slight gamble but Healey certainly knows where the back of the net is.

Is he the out-and-out striker who can fire West Brom to the playoffs or into the top-two? Only time would tell if he came in.

But it’s good they’re looking at these types of players and if they’re being linked with it, they are clearly doing their homework.

Healey could be one who won’t cost a fortune but could come in and do a job. That’s the kind of player they should be looking at.”

Healey has scored 11 goals in 15 appearances in Ligue 2 for Toulouse this season.

In his last league match on 20 November, the ex-Cardiff striker scored all four goals as Toulouse smashed Souchaux 4-1.

In other West Brom news, Phillips is baffled by this “farcical” announcement about a Baggies player.
