Barry Fry: West Brom will complete Dwight Gayle transfer, just need to agree wages

Peterborough director Barry Fry has shared that he expected Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle to join West Brom.

Mike McGrath reported on Thursday (2nd December) that the Magpies are willing to allow the striker to leave on a loan with an obligation to buy, with the Baggies interested.

Fry admitted that his side were also interested, but believes that West Brom are in prime position and will complete the deal if wages can be agreed.

Speaking to Peterborough Today, Fry shared his thoughts on a potential January exit for Gayle next month.

“It looks like he will leave now, but it won’t be to return to us,” he said.

“There’s no chance of that. It’s a lovely thought, but he’s on upwards of £50k a week and we couldn’t afford to pay him £5k.

“West Brom are keen on Dwight and I would expect that’s where he will end up if they can agree a deal on his wages.”

Living in the past?

Fry must be having a laugh if he thinks that the Baggies are in a position to spend that sort of money on wages too.

Valerien Ismael has been working on scraps financially despite the likes of Matheus Pereira being sold, with the majority of our deals done for free.

Gayle would need to agree to a lower wage package to move back to The Hawthorns, but even then, he would be on a big number.

Is it worth it? Despite scoring many times during his last spell at the club, there are serious doubts given he has hardly played since in the Premier League.

The Albion need to go down a better path and look for younger, hungrier players who are just as dangerous in the final third.
