Keith Hackett: Michal Helik deserved red card for Barnsley v West Brom
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League & FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Brom...
Keith Hackett has insisted that Barnsley defender Michal Helik should have seen red against West Brom on Friday evening (17th December).
The former Premier League referee admitted the referee was in a good position to see the incident that saw Jordan Hugill having to leave the pitch.
Helik left an awful challenge on the Norwich loanee, scraping his studs straight down the front of his leg, but was only booked.

“Red card,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“It’s a red card. He is [in a good position].“
Hackett went on to call for VAR in the Championship as it would eradicate these errors rather than cause outrage.

Shocker.
How on earth this wasn’t punished with a red card, we still don’t know.
Helik was wildly out of control and couldn’t have made more contact with his studs straight down the front of Hugill.
There was our dismay on the face of the striker as only a yellow card was handed out, and the replays on Sky simply made things look even worst.
Officiating in the Championship is simply getting worst, and there have been no signs of it improving as each week passes.
Hackett admitting that the referee was in a good position just proves that he made the wrong decision and that is happening far too often.
