Neil Taylor set to re-sign with Middlesbrough, ending West Brom interest - report

West Brom are set to miss out on a free transfer signing of Neil Taylor after he agreed to re-sign with Middlesbrough, according to Lyall Thomas.

The Baggies had been interested in securing a free transfer for the former Swansea and Aston Villa left-back as cover for their left wing-back position [talkSPORT].

Taylor’s current contract is due to expire this month and the Welshman has featured only twice since joining in November.

It has now been reported by Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas that the 32-year-old has agreed a new contract with Boro, which will bring to an end the interest of West Brom in bringing him to the Hawthorns.

No bother

A deal to bring Taylor to West Brom was seen as a way to provide cover for Conor Townsend, who has been one of the standout players in the Championship this season.

West Brom are struggling in their chase for promotion, with just two wins in their last nine games.

That has seen them drop down to fourth place in the Championship table, seven points behind top of the table Bournemouth and just three points ahead of Middlesbrough in seventh.

Taylor would have brought experience to the squad and some reliability at both ends of the pitch, but ultimately this isn’t a deal that was make-or-break for their campaign.

With Taylor Gardner-Hickman signing a new deal and Townsend in good form, there isn’t a huge need for Taylor in the squad and Middlesbrough haven’t particularly got one over on the Baggies here.
