Ex-Premier League referee wants FA intervention at West Brom amid red card crisis
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League & FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Brom...
Keith Hackett has called on West Brom to get the FA or PGMOL to help them curb their issues with red cards.
Cedric Kipre’s red card against Brighton on Sunday not only potentially cost the Baggies a place in the FA Cup Fourth Road, but it was also their sixth red card in their last 12 matches.
Valerien Ismael’s failure to get a hold of his side’s disciplinary issues is costing the club points in their bid to return to the Premier League and Hackett has thought up a solution to the issue.
“Look, the first rule is that the manager’s got to manage and they’ve clearly got a problem,” the former Premier League and FIFA official told West Brom News.
“If I was the manager, there are two things I would do.
“I would certainly bring in someone from the FA or from the PGMOL and with the coaching staff sat in the room and the incidents on the big screen, I’d ask them to discuss them.
“There appears to be a lack of understanding that players can operate outside of the law of the game.
“None of these red cards are being overturned and then the other thing is if a player is already got a yellow, the psychology of that player should be to put a brake on his actions.
“He should think seriously if he’s going to commit another yellow-card challenge because if he does, he’s walking.
“It’s a discussion with the referee boss at West Brom, maybe with another referee or a referee’s coach and then once you’ve done that, go into a big room with the players and have an open discussion.”
West Brom players have been sent off five times in the Championship this season, which is two more than any other club in the division.
On top of that, Ismael’s players have picked up 49 yellow cards, which is the joint-sixth highest total in the Championship [WhoScored].
Jake Livermore and Kyle Bartley have both been booked six times already this season.
In other West Brom news, this player was dubbed “stupid” by a Sky Sports pundit in the loss to Brighton.
