West Brom need to sign another goalscoring midfielder - Kevin Phillips

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns

Kevin Phillips has urged West Brom to sign another goalscoring midfielder before the end of the January transfer window.

The ex-Baggies talisman has insisted that there isn’t a clear player that springs to mind, but it would excite the fans at The Hawthorns.

Alex Mowatt is currently the only player capable of pushing forward from the midfield two, but his goals have dried up recently.

“That goalscoring midfielder would take the burden of your strikers, and give you a different dynamic,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“I would like to see that, where they get him from, I don’t know, but if a player like that was to join the club then that would be an exciting player for the fans to watch.”

That would certainly require Valerien Ismael changing his system from the current midfield two or even taking Jake Livermore out of the side.

Livermore has struggled in recent weeks and months, and Mowatt is one of the first names on the teamsheet given his history with the manager.

Callum Robinson and Karlan Grant appear to be the only two getting on the scoresheet for the Baggies, who are missing far too many chances.

Another name in the middle of the park could help that, and as much as we hate to say it, someone like Matheus Pereira would fill that space perfectly.
