Kevin Phillips backs Taylor Gardner-Hickman to start for West Brom v Queens Park Rangers

Kevin Phillips has backed Taylor Gardner-Hickman to start in midfield for West Brom against Queens Park Rangers this afternoon.

The ex-Baggies talisman has insisted that it is a great shame to have Alex Mowatt missing through suspension, but it is an opportunity for someone else.

Gardner-Hickman has impressed during his cameos this season, with Phillips singling out the performance at Coventry.

“It wouldn’t surprise me,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“We’ve seen what he can do, on his day he is a very good player, we saw that at Coventry. I thought he was excellent on that day, so I don’t think he’ll have any qualms about putting him in a big game.

“It’s a shame to be missing Mowatt through suspension, but it’s an opportunity for someone else.”

Gardner-Hickman has been one of the main positives this season, breaking into and cementing his spot in the first-team squad.

The youngster is capable of playing at wing-back as well as in midfield and has signed a new long-term contract at The Hawthorns.

Senior players have frequently let us down at times this season, and it would be no surprise to see Valerien Ismael put his faith in youth once again.

It would only be his sixth start of the season, but a real vote of confidence.
