Kevin Phillips: West Brom could be set for 'huge blow' if Sam Johnstone leaves club in January
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has insisted it would be a “huge blow” if Sam Johnstone was to leave West Brom in the January window.
The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that if a bid was to come in this month, the Albion would likely take the money.
Johnstone admitted this week that he is desperate for a return to the Premier League, with only six months left on his current deal.
“It always a difficult one,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“You can look at it from two point’s of view, the club’s point of view and then about getting the club back to the Premier League.
“From a business point of view, if a big offer comes in, it wouldn’t surprise me if the club took it because he could walk away for free in the summer. I would like to see the club wanting him to stay, but it’s business.
“I’d like to see the player himself help get the club back to the Premier League. If he was to leave, it would be a huge blow.”
Johnstone is free to talk to any European clubs now if he wanted, but English clubs would need to wait until the summer to get a free deal done.
There have been numerous links for months now, but no movement has been made on that, nor a new contract at The Hawthorns.
Phillips is spot on, this would be a huge blow if he was to pack his bags and move on before the end of the month.
