Don Goodman: West Brom will be worried about top-six chances amid form

Don Goodman has claimed West Brom will be worried about their chances of finishing in the top-six amid their recent run of form.

Fifth-placed Baggies have not won in their last four Championship games, and with four teams closing in on them for a spot in the play-offs places, the pundit has claimed on Sky Sports EFL podcast that their struggles in front of goal are starting to prove costly.

Albion have scored just four times in their last nine league games, and their tally of 31 goals so far this term is only better than one team in the top ten.

Goodman said (at 25m24s): “It’s a bit mystifying how they started the season on fire. They scored 20 goals in the first 10 games and now they have scored 11 goals in their last 16. How do you get from that… From really being prolific, and the answer is they are missing chances.

“Where early part of the season, they were converting the chances. They have had chances, they just have missed big times in games, and at the moment, they seem to be paying the price for that.

“Look, they need to find a winning run very, very quickly. The top two are getting away and actually, are they looking more over their shoulder now and worrying about whether they can stay in the top-six.

“If the run of form continues the way it is, that will be a concern for them.”

Valerien Ismael’s men simply have to improve in front of goal if they want to be playing in the Premier League next season.

With seven points between them and the top-two, and just a point separating them from seventh-placed Huddersfield Town, things are not looking very good for West Brom.

They brought in USA international striker Daryl Dike on New Year day, but they may have to further bolster their attack as their current options are just not enough.

Karlan Grant has nine goals so far, with Callum Robinson and Matt Phillips weighing in with five goals and three goals, respectively.

However, no other attacker has scored more than once in the team, and that is simply not good enough.

Ismael needs his men to start firing on all cylinders, and recruiting one or two more forwards could do the trick.

They are no longer looking like one of the favourites for promotion, and should they fail to improve in the final third, they could be spending another season in the division.
