Kevin Phillips surprised that Jordan Hugill is still at West Brom
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has shared his surprise that Jordan Hugill is still at West Brom midway through the January window.
The ex-Baggies talisman insisted that if Hugill was to return to Norwich, it would have happened earlier this month.
There was talk of the striker being recalled by the Canaries, but Dean Smith recently admitted he wasn’t aware of any clause.
“I’m very surprised if I’m being honest,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“We’re almost halfway through the month, and I’m very surprised, if he was going to go back, he would have gone straight away, so I think Ismael is probably being sensible.
“If he can keep him at the club, and the club are happy to do that financially then it’s another player.
“It gives you another option, although we can all agree that it hasn’t been the best of moves so far, you never know, sometimes players need time and the second half of the season he may come good.”
Valerien Ismael has admitted he has had conversations with Hugill, but it looks as though they will be together until the end of the season.
The striker was left out completely at Queens Park Rangers over the weekend, and there is nothing to suggest that will change.
Daryl Dike has arrived and was used off the bench, with a start beckoning against Peterborough.
That pushes Hugill further down the pecking order, and a return to Norwich this month may be best for all parties.
