Kevin Phillips: West Brom clever with potential summer exit lined up for Callum Morton

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that West Brom have been clever by potentially lining up a permanent summer exit for Callum Morton.

The ex-Baggies talisman has suggested that if the Albion earn promotion to the Premier League, they will make some money on the young striker.

Morton has joined Peterborough on loan this month, with their chairman, Darrah MacAnthony, already admitting they’re hopeful of a permanent deal in the future.

“I think if West Brom got to the Premier League, it would be very very difficult for the lad,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“He’s been sent back out on loan when we’re in the Championship, that suggests that they’re not quite comfortable of him playing at that standard, go out and get more experience.

“You’ve got to put him in the shop window, or with the view to get him back and push him into the first-team squad, but I think, it’s difficult.

“They’re probably being quite clever, if they don’t go up, there’s a player there who’s gone out and has experience we’ll use him next year, but if we do go up, at least we might be able to sell him and make a few quid.”

It makes sense in every department for this move.

If Morton was going to have made it into the first-team consistently, it would have happened so far at The Hawthorns.

Reyes Cleary is the name on everyone’s lips in the academy attacking options, with Morton to forgotten figure as things stand.

Peterborough appear confident of securing a permanent deal, and it looks as though that is the plan for everyone involved in this move.
