Young talent Leo Cardoso has left West Brom and seemingly joined Chelsea after he was spotted posing with his new club’s shirt.
The Secret Scout tweeted an image of Cardoso, 16, with his name on a number 10 Chelsea shirt with John Terry and Petr Cech. Terry and Cech both work in advisory roles for Chelsea’s academy.
Football Insider reported on 28 October that the Londoners were trying to sign Cardoso, who’s represented Portugal and England at youth level while on the books at the Albion.
Another one bites the dust
It seems like every month there’s a highly-rated youngster quitting West Brom in order to join a Premier League club’s academy.
Cardoso was one of the more highly-rated teenagers at the Albion with it being reported he’s “seen as one of the best young players in the country with the potential to be a Premier League regular of the future”.
It’s a shame that he’s left the Black Country club but when Chelsea comes calling when you’re that age, who can blame him?
Speaking to West Brom News on 3 November about Cardoso when Chelsea were first linked with him, Kevin Phillips said that he’d rather the attacking midfielder stayed put in the West Midlands, where there may be more opportunities for him.
“At West Brom, the kid probably has more of an opportunity to play in the first-team there than he would at Chelsea,” said Phillips. “You just hope they don’t see him as an asset who’ll never ever get a chance and just see it as a business deal to make money.
“It’s great but at the same time, it isn’t because West Brom need to keep their young players at the club and bleed them into the first-team at some point.”
In other West Brom news, some players had their confidence shattered by this former Baggies man.
