Kevin Phillips: Darnell Furlong red card was last thing West Brom needed this week

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that Darnell Furlong’s red card against Nottingham Forest was the last thing West Brom needed this week.

The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that Steve Bruce will be as frustrated as anyone watching his side crash to another defeat.

That loss on Monday most likely condemned the Albion to another season in the Championship, with stupid decisions costing them yet again.

“When you’re chasing and needing points to get in those play-offs, you don’t need to be going down to 10 men,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“You’re then backs to the wall, whether you agree with it or not, the referee has made a decision. You’re fighting an uphill battle, it was a tough one for West Brom to take and Bruce, in any game wouldn’t have wanted it, so it’s frustrating.”

Not good enough.

The Baggies can blame the officiating all they like, but simple mistakes continue to be made by experienced players.

Furlong was silly to get booked so early, and after he was deemed to have handled the ball, there was only one other outcome.

Bruce will be raging inside with some of the amateur things he is seeing from these players, and they will be playing for their futures.
