Kevin Phillips reacts to Karlan Grant bust-up after West Brom defeat v Nottingham Forest

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has admitted that it was natural for Karlan Grant to be unhappy after he was sacrificed as West Brom lost at Nottingham Forest.

The ex-Baggies talisman insisted that it is never nice to be taken off, but it is usually an attacker who comes off after a red card.

Darnell Furlong was shown his marching orders in the opening 25 minutes at the City Ground, leading to Grant having a bust-up after coming off.

“I think of course when you get a man sent off, generally a frontman has to be sacrificed,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“It’s happened to me in my career and it’s not nice, but you get the reason why. Naturally, you want the player to be disappointed, but that’s the rule of thumb, that the striker has to come off and unfortunately it was him.

“It is what it is, you have to take one for the team and I understand why Steve Bruce did it. It’s a natural reaction for a player coming off.”

This is the type of passion we have been craving to see for the entire season in the Championship.

We have slipped away without a trace, and that is simply unacceptable given our squad and players within it.

Grant has been one of the few to step up, and you could see the anger going through him as he knew he was no longer able to make a difference.

This is the minimum we expect, and no doubt he will be back firing this afternoon against Coventry at The Hawthorns.
