Quevin Castro and Zac Ashworth start after latest Steve Bruce team news - Predicted West Brom XI v Barnsley

West Brom could hand first-team opportunities to two academy starlets in their final Championship game of the season against Barnsley.

The Baggies host relegated basement side at the Hawthorns on Saturday [May 7] lunchtime, looking to end a torrid campaign on a high with all three points.

But Steve Bruce could opt to hand out some chances with injuries in the squad and nothing to play for in the final game.

In goal David Button will likely continue as he edges towards being the club’s number one next season, with Sam Johnstone set to exit at the end of his contract this summer.

In defence both Kyle Bartley and Conor Townsend are expected to miss the game through injury, which opens up opportunities.

Young academy man Zac Ashworth made his first-team debut as a substitute in the win over Reading last week and could start at left-back here.

Matt Clarke’s loan from Brighton has been a relative success and he should start at centre-back back in what could be his final game for the club, while Semi Ajayi will line up in the absence of Bartley alongside him.

Darnell Furlong’s red card against Nottingham Forest has seen him lose his place at right-back, with Dara O’Shea likely to be picked ahead of him once again.

Captain Jake Livermore will continue in the heart of the midfield, but could be accompanied by another young academy man as Quevin Castro looks to progress into the first-team.

Castro has impressed as a substitute and could get a start here, with Jayson Molumby’s future secured after finalising a permanent deal from Brighton in the week.

Out wide Adam Reach could get a chance in his natural position on the left, while consensus player of the season Taylor Gardner-Hickman can be shifted to a wide right role to get him in the side.

Up front there will be no Andy Carroll after his release was confirmed by the club in advance of the summer, so 16-goal top scorer Karlan Grant will continue as the main man.

He should be partnered by Callum Robinson, with the two striking up a great relationship that has seen them combine for eight goals this season – a tally only beaten by Fulham duo Aleksandar Mitrovic and Harry Wilson (11).
