West Brom miss out on 17-year-old defender Alex Murphy to Newcastle United
West Brom have missed out on target Alex Murphy after Newcastle United confirmed the signing of the 17-year-old Galway defender.
As reported by the Newcastle Chronicle [28 May], the Baggies were reportedly interested in the defender along with Brighton before his move to the Tyneside.
Despite missing out on the defender the Baggies secured the signing of Reading’s John Swift on a three year deal on Thursday [26 May].
Good start to the window
Despite missing out on Murphy, it has been a good start to the window for Steve Bruce and West Brom.
The signing of Swift is a statement of intent for the Baggies and shows they can compete for the best players in the Championship.
Swift is in the prime of his career and will offer the Baggies a much-needed creative spark going forward.
Murphy would’ve been an excellent signing for the future for the Baggies and could’ve potentially been given more first-team opportunities at The Hawthorns.
West Brom fans will be encouraged to see Bruce showing interest in younger players who could be developed and sold for a larger fee.
The signing of Swift should be a springboard for the Baggies to use to bring in players of a similar calibre.
Millwall’s Jed Wallace has been of interest to Bruce and could potentially be tempted to make the move after hearing of Swift’s arrival.
Hopefully, Bruce’s early summer business is a sign of things to come.
