West Brom ready loan offer to sign 'top target' Cameron Archer from Aston Villa

West Brom have made Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer a “top target” for the summer transfer window, according to the Birmingham Post.

The newspaper reported via their print edition on Thursday (16 June, page 55) that Albion are readying a loan bid to sign the 20-year-old striker, who spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan at Preston.

It is understood that Steve Bruce wants to continue adding to the squad he inherited from Valerien Ismael earlier this year after already completing a deal for John Swift and making Jayson Molumby’s loan deal into a permanent one.

The Birmingham Post adds that the Baggies hope to have Daryl Dike available for the start of the 2022/23 season and that Archer is seen as someone who can add “further depth” to Bruce’s striker options.

Attacking depth

West Brom’s striker options ahead of the 2022/23 season are mixed.

Kenneth Zohore remains at the club while you can almost guarantee that Callum Robinson and Matt Phillips are also set to be used as strikers by Steve Bruce when needed. Karlan Grant was West Brom’s top goalscorer in their disappointing Championship campaign and could start most games.

But the big one for the Baggies is Daryl Dike. Will he be fit and will he hit the ground running after spending such a lengthy spell on the sidelines?

It’s a phrase that gets used a lot in football but Dike, 22, would almost literally be like a new signing for the Albion if he’s fit to start the season.

The USA international managed just two appearances for the Black Country club before suffering a season-ending injury after he made his move from Orlando City.

With Archer, he played well for Preston this year, scoring seven goals in 20 appearances with one of those goals coming on his debut against West Brom at The Hawthorns in January.

For some depth in the striker area, we’d take him and that’ll leave Bruce with striker options of Dike, Grant, Archer, Robinson, Zohore and Phillips.

We’d be more than happy for him to get rid of the latter three, though.

In other West Brom news, Albion are also in advanced talks to sign another new player at The Hawthorns this summer.
