West Brom goalkeeper very close to Portsmouth loan move
Josh Griffiths is close to signing a loan deal with Portsmouth according to Alex Crook, a day after he was talked up by Steve Bruce.
The Baggies boss had been speaking to Sky Sports after completing the signing of Jed Wallace on Thursday (23 June) and had specified he wasn’t look at any goalkeeping targets.
He made a point of mentioning his “exceptionally good young goalkeeper” who had “been on loan for a couple of years” as he tipped his current options to fight for the number one role after Sam Johnstone’s exit.
The 20-year-old Griffiths spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Lincoln City, following a year at Cheltenham Town.
The other Albion keepers are David Button and Alex Palmer who have both received recent contract extensions.
It seemed like Bruce was giving the youngster a chance to fight for his place against the two older keepers.
It’s unlikely that the “young goalkeeper” coming of a “couple” of loans was 25-year-old Palmer who has had seven loan moves in as many years.
But it looks like he will actually be the one looking to shift prospective starter Button.
Griffiths is highly-rated and may well be in the club’s thoughts as the number one of the future, but after consecutive seasons in League Two and then League One it seems he is not yet deemed ready for the second tier.
Once the Baggies handed extensions to the older pair it seemed like they were likely to be set for a battle for a place in the starting XI.
But had the junior member of the trio surprised everyone and forged himself a role they would hardly have been the first to be usurped by an up-and-coming talent.
It appears that isn’t set to happen this summer with the man for the future apparently set to make another move.
In other West Brom news, there may be a third new signing on the horizon.
