West Brom: BBC pundit makes Grady Diangana selection prediction

West Brom will begin their 2022-23 Championship season on Saturday as they head north to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough.

Steve Bruce has a lot of selection dilemmas to resolve prior to the 5:30pm kick-off and one of those decisions revolves around the enigmatic winger Grady Diangana.

The Baggies have already signed Jed Wallace to play out wide but the other flank is yet to be filled and BBC pundit Carlton Palmer thinks the former West Ham youngster should not be in the starting lineup on Teesside.

“It’s a difficult one because he’s a fair player and without a shadow of a doubt he’s got plenty of ability,” Palmer said to Football League World.

“He’s not going to be the type of player to go into a side and make the side tick, he needs good players around him to allow him to play his best football.

“I don’t think he’ll start in the side, he’ll definitely be on the bench and I think in a long season in the Championship, there’s plenty of games, there’s injuries and suspensions, he’s going to get his opportunity this season and he’s got to take it because he’s now coming into his prime.

“He can’t be seen year after year as somebody with potential and not really showing that potential. So I think he’s got the opportunity this season.”

Impact substitute

It is always difficult to make a decision when it comes to a player as unpredictable as Diangana and Brue is not the only manager to have ever faced this dilemma.

On his day, there is arguably no better attacker in the division and he would give even the best full-backs in the world a tough time but the problem is that his day comes around very rarely.

When he is not at his potent best, he is more suited to coming off the bench and being extremely direct with his running both on and off the ball so he can use his ace against the tiring legs of the opposition.

That is where Bruce will be hoping to utilise him, to begin with, and if he starts to tear things up off the bench, he may force his way into the starting XI but so often, these kinds of players struggle when they have to play a full 90 minutes from the start.

In other West Brom news, Bruce is keen to add more midfield grit to his armoury and has identified this Manchester United youngster as a potential loan option.
