Dean Ashton full of praise for West Brom duo Jed Wallace and John Swift

Dean Ashton was full of praise for John Swift and Jed Wallace as the pair combined to rescue a point for West Brom in their opening Championship game against Middlesbrough.

Isaiah Jones’ 10th-minute strike was cancelled out by Swift’s 52nd-minute finish, after excellent work from Wallace on the right flank.

Ashton feels that the pair could ease the Baggies’ goalscoring woes from the 2021/22 campaign.

Talking on ITV4’s EFL highlights on Saturday 30 July, Ashton said: “They were the worst in terms of goals scored in the top 12 with only 52 goals last season, but when you bring in proven quality in this division, you don’t get much more proven than Jed Wallace and John Swift.

“Their arrivals should make the hairs on West Brom fans stand up because of their creativity.

“It was a lovely cut-back from Wallace and a good finish from Swift.

“Those two will be key if West Brom are to be competitive at the top end of the League.”

Solid point

Steve Bruce will be delighted with a point at the Riverside after being under the cosh at times in the first half.

Chris Wilder’s side were always going to start fast with a number of new summer additions making their debut for the Teessiders.

However, the Baggies second-half performance will be a huge boost, with Wallace and Swift’s performances a big positive.

If Bruce can get the best out of the midfield duo then there is no reason why West Brom won’t be challenging towards the top of the table.

Wallace has displayed for a number of years his ability to be a consistent attacking outlet for Millwall in the Championship and the free agent could turn out to be a big coup for the Baggies.

His assist for Swift displayed a level of calmness and excellent awareness to give the former Reading man a relatively easy finish.

It’s certainly time for some more excitement to be back to The Hawthorns.

In other West Brom news, this Manchester United teenager has piqued the interest of Steve Bruce but there is a lot of competition over a loan signing.
