Tottenham official account mocks Saido Berahino update from when he was at West Brom

Saido Berahino was once one of the most promising players in the country at West Brom.

The 32-year-old, who is now at Slovenian side NK Tabor Sezana, came through the Baggies academy and became an instant hit.

After netting nine goals in all competitions in his breakthrough campaign, the striker followed this up with another 20 in the 2014/15 season.

It was a highly impressive return at The Hawthorns and helped West Brom reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

As a result, many teams were after the attacker going into the 2015/16 campaign.

Tottenham mock old decision to pursue Son Heung-min over Berahino

In the 2015 summer transfer window, West Brom looked destined to lose Berahino to Spurs

Tottenham had put in various bids for the striker, with the Burundi international even handing in a transfer request.

In the end, Spurs never got their man and instead signed Son Heung-min, a decision that duly paid off.

Son left Tottenham on Wednesday as a legend after a 10-year spell at the London club.

In comparison, Berahino’s career has completely collapsed, with the 32-year-old currently playing in the Slovenian second tier.

As a result, Spurs mocked their decision to sign Son over the former Baggies striker, a decision that seemed controversial at the time, on their official X account (6 August).

The London club quoted a post from transfer specialist David Ornstein explaining this decision and simply put: “It’ll never work.”

Failed Berahino sale to Spurs was a disaster for West Brom

In the end, the transfer saga surrounding Berahino was a disaster for the Baggies.

The striker never rekindled his previous form, with West Brom eventually selling him to Stoke City for £15 million, nearly half of their asking price from a year-and-a-half prior.

Since then, Berahino has burnt all bridges at West Brom, with fans making it clear they never wanted him to return after his departure.

Thankfully, the Baggies have since learned their lesson and have now been more open to sales, especially when they can make a profit.

Hopefully, West Brom can avoid a repeat of the Berahino saga in the future, with players such as Tom Follows, who is currently linked away.
